Did you do any research?
Not really. I had books strewn over my desk, but the key influences were The Wizard of Oz, Slaughterhouse-Five, Black Narcissus and Jack Clayton’s The Innocents. The Wizard of Oz, to me, is about depression. Dorothy is living in this black-and-white world of adolescence where everyone is scolding her. She’s clearly upset about more than her dog at the start of the story. There’s clearly something nagging at her beyond her dog when she sings “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” The whole journey in that film—going into this magical universe where trouble melts like lemon drops, meeting these characters who she befriends, each of whom is missing some part of their personality or psyche, and then never really discovering what she’s searching for, and even more than that being told she could have gone home any time she wanted—all of these fable-like aspects were more important than research I might have done. In the book Girl, Interrupted there wasn’t some key or secret to this girl’s problems. It wasn’t as if her daddy burned her with cigarettes or her brother died in a boating accident and it was all her fault. That just wasn’t there. It’s about her discovering, quite simply, that she has to pull it together herself.
