Mid to late summer. By midsummer, this container is reaching its peak, with an abundance of daisy-form blooms on ‘Arizona Apricot’ blanket flower and ‘Prairie Splendor’ purple coneflower and fuzzy-looking bloom spikes on ‘Kobold’ blazing star rising above the elegantly arching green leaves of the Mexican feather grass. ‘Shenandoah’ switch grass creates a vertical accent in the center, with its green blades developing red tips in midsummer and airy flower heads emerging at the top of the plant in late summer.

Keep up with watering now, and fertilize again once or twice before late summer. Keep clipping the dead blooms off the blanket flower. Cut off the finished purple coneflower blossoms (snip just above the uppermost leaf or bud on the stem), to encourage rebloom, or leave them to develop into dark seed heads that will attract finches and other backyard birds. These winged visitors also enjoy feeding on the fluffy seed heads of the ‘Kobold’ blazing star.
