One of the great things about container gardening is that you do not have to be super-fit to do it. No digging up huge garden plots or wheel-barrowing heaps of dirt around, for this reason it is well suited to most physical abilities. Age is of hardly any concern, which makes container gardening suitable for young and not-so-young alike. Ready to get started? Ok, lets look at tomatoes and their suitability for container gardening.
Fruit or Vegetable?
The humble tomato is probably the best known; most used vegetable in the world today; which is somewhat strange considering the fact that it is in fact a fruit! Technically speaking the tomato is a fruit, as true fruits are developed from the ovary of the flower which in turn contain the seeds of the plant.
The argument over whether or not it is a fruit or a vegetable is largely due to the differences between scientists and cooks, so it is not something to lose any sleep over in my opinion. Chefs generally regard a tomato as a vegetable because it is primarily used in savory dishes rather than in sweet dishes.
Whether you regard it as a fruit or as a vegetable, there is no doubt that the tomato is the most versatile of plants and is used massively in sauces, relishes , pickles etc; as well as innumerable different dishes.
In fact it is difficult to eat a savory dish in a restaurant today, that has not been flavored in some way by tomatoes or tomato extracts – which is bad news if you have an intolerance to tomatoes.
