A strategic way to develop your skills of observation and reflection on the structures and patterns that are embedded in schools and classrooms is to examine what reformers, critics, or individuals with promising ideas think teachers should be doing differently. Often, these calls for change are framed as a way to encourage teachers to move away from tired and worn assumptions and routines toward more educationally sound beliefs and practices. A book commonly recommended for teachers was written by Steven Zemelman, Harvey Daniels, and Arthur Hyde, and titled Best Practice: Today’s Standards for Teaching and Learning in America’s Schools (2005). These authors combed through reports of various professional societies and associations related to curriculum in math, science, social studies, English, and the arts to compile common recommendations to guide changes in teaching and learning. As you read this list, note how many of these recommendations for change may be reflected in the content of your teacher education curriculum as well (recalling from Chapter 4 how teacher education program orientations vary along several dimensions.
