Unlike David, whose initial sin seems to have been unpremeditated, Ananias and Sapphira sinned deliberately, with careful preparation. Also their sin appears to have had more immediate and more dire consequences: “When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last” (5:5). The same fate befell his wife three hours later. This raises an important question: Can Satan really devour God’s children, even depriving them of their salvation?

The story of Ananias and Sapphira is ambiguous on this point. But turn to the first epistle of John, where the apostle wrote:

We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him (1 John 5:18).
