Here’s a not-so-basic square with a three-dimensional feature that allows the color underneath to peek out. For the Quick & Easy version, omit Round 6.

Crocodile Stitch Instructions are written for right-handed crochet with left-handed directions in brackets. Holding piece with first st to be worked to the right [left] at 3 o’clock [9 o’clock] position and working from right to left [left to right], starting with standing dc, work 5 dc around post of dc, ch 2; rotate piece 180° to 9 o’clock [3 o’clock] position, 5 dc around post of next dc.

Picot-3 Ch 3, slip st in 3rd ch from hook.
