Lesson 19

The heel-toe-toe-heel pattern

In this lesson, you’re going to work with a slightly different heel-toe pattern we call the heel-toe-toe-heel pattern:

Rhythm 19-1: Heel-toe-toe-heel pattern

As you play, you’ll probably notice that your hands are once again making a heel-heel-toe-toe pattern, this time from left to right, starting with the left heel. Thinking of the pattern in this way may make it easier to learn, but you must remember that the left heel does not fall on 1; it falls on the AND of 4 just before 1. The right heel is 1.

Playing a different heel-toe pattern opens up new possibilities for variation. The following middle drum part from calypso is exactly the same as this new heel-toe pattern, except for the open tone in the left hand on the AND of 4:

Rhythm 19-2: Calypso middle drum part
