When and why do people use the Compromising Approach?

When we have serious values differences, limited time, and full collaboration is not possible, we often turn to compromise. But can you really compromise on key issues that reflect core values integral to your identity?

In 2015, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that all U.S. states must allow same-sex marriage, the state of Utah took preemptive legislative action to prepare for this legal change. Rather than wait for future court cases to resolve questions about the ruling and produce real winners and losers, the Utah State legislature brought key stakeholders, including Equality Utah and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to the negotiating table.

Contrary to common practice, instead of crafting legislation to protect one population over another, the Utah state legislature set to work to secure much-needed protections for the LGBTQ+ and religious communities. Gathering all stakeholders together, the legislators created a two-bill package that would protect the LGBTQ+ community from discrimination in housing and hiring while securing religious freedom protections for religious entities and individuals. Signaling the role of compromise in drafting these bills, the parties agreed to leave public accommodations issues off the table because they are so difficult to legislate.
