Chapter 11

Alexis

Moving out was stressful, no doubt about it. Moving out with the girl she’d been dating for a month was making her a bundle of nervous energy waiting to explode. She couldn’t wait to move out and have their apartment ready, to have a space just for themselves without worrying about her fathers walking in or waking up.

But people would sometimes even wait for years before actually agreeing to live together. Elijah was one of the most sensible people she knew, and he decided against sharing a dorm room with Mason for the second semester, even though they’d already been serious by then. Cole and Justin moved after having dated for a year, and they’d mostly done so because it was the wisest option financially.

Alexis and Sierra moving in with each other also fell under the ‘financially wise’ category, but it felt like more; it felt different. It wasn’t that Alexis hadn’t shared a place before. All throughout college, she’d shared a room with other girls, a different one each year, so she wasn’t new to what it was like living with another person. But this wasn’t anywhere near the same.

The past few weeks, they hadn’t gone out much. After Alexis’ encounter with weed, she’d felt too embarrassed to suggest it. Sierra had been great the following day after she’d woken up feeling like a zombie, and Alexis could admit to herself that that level of care made her weak in the knees. But she still wasn’t risking it ever happening again.

“Just let me help,” Sierra coaxed as she struggled with the suitcases.

She’d been going on about it for what felt like hours. At first, Alexis had wanted to prove a point, that she too could be independent and handle things on her own. Now, though, it seemed like the smart choice was to just accept Sierra’s help. After all, Sierra had managed to fit everything she owned into that same backpack she’d worn the first day she’d stayed the night. Meanwhile, Alexis had two large suitcases full of clothes, plus boxes her fathers had helped them pack. They were going to lend a hand, but had a shift, so they compensated by hiring a moving van. And they’d promised to be there come the weekend to help with the heavier stuff neither Alexis nor Sierra felt like taking a chance with.

It was the downside of renting an unfurnished studio. The upside was that the apartment was on the Upper East Side, not too far from Central Park thanks to renting prices lowering in the area. Alexis could cross the grounds to get to work and be there in only twenty minutes, or take the bus and cut that time in half. Mason looked super jealous when she’d told him about the bargain she’d found near the Park: that had been his dream place!

The location worked for Sierra, too. With the bakery between Midtown and Hell’s Kitchen –she’d never been good at learning where each neighborhood ended precisely– it was twenty to thirty minutes away taking the subway.
