Study 1

The first study employs a widely used triad task: subjects are presented with three images and asked how similar they are to each other. Each triad is arranged with one image on top and two images, which we call the anchor images, at the bottom (Lara et al., 2012). The center image is a morphed composite of the two anchor images, equidistant from each other.

We use three sets of images of novel objects.5 We chose novel objects to ensure that subjects had not formed concepts for them prior to the experiment. In each set the images are the same size and constructed of the same materials but have different shapes.6 Figure 10.3 depicts the three sets of objects. The images are either (1) unlabeled, or (2) the left and right objects bear different nonsense labels. When labeled, the center image either bears the label of either the left image or the right image. In all experiments, participants are shown three images and asked to indicate how similar is the middle image to those to its right and left (they are also asked to rate its similarity with the left and right images).7
