The FaceGen™ software has chosen a somewhat new and different route. This program uses three-dimensional artistic generation of faces on a drawn animated base. It is possible to create a basic head based on the description of gender, phenotype, age, stature and other features as a template.

Finally, the colour and shape of the facial features can be adjusted to the witness’s descriptions using slide bars. Additionally, the facial expression, phenotype and even the perspective can be changed. In this way the artist can get closer and closer to creating the image of the perpetrator stored in the witness’s memory.

The biggest advantages of this software are on the one hand that the witness does not need to be shown templates for selecting the most similar facial features (no visual overshadowing effect) and on the other the opportunity of having a three-dimensional and drawn representation.

One disadvantage is, as with most specialist composite image programs, the limited editing possibilities with the tools available. Additional editing software is needed for the fine detail.
