Tip

Clearing Chips

When carving detail, use a soft toothbrush to remove any chips rather than pulling or cutting them out.

Painting and Finishing

For this piece, I used oil paint thinned with between 10 and 50 parts boiled linseed oil. The oil paints dry slower than acrylic paints, so you can adjust the colors easier. If a piece looks too dark, wash away some of the paint with a small amount of mineral spirits. If the area is too light, add small amounts of dark oil paint, such as black or burnt umber, and blend. Adjust the colors of the thinned mixtures by adding more boiled linseed oil to make it lighter or more oil paint to make it darker.
