Blueberry, Jelly Bean (Vaccinium corymbosum ‘ZF06-179’): Deciduous shrub. A compact selection with beautiful blue-green leaves tinged with red in colder weather. The plants have showy, pinkish-white flowers in the spring followed by sweet little blueberries about midsummer. This blueberry is part of a newer line of plants being bred for container gardens and small spaces. It stays under 2 feet (0.6 m) high and wide and makes a good filler in the middle or back of a larger planter. Use alone in a medium-sized pot for a nice anchor to a trio of containers.

Lavender ‘Hidcote’ (Lavandula angustifolia ‘Hidcote’): Herbaceous perennial. Compact English lavender with deep purple flowers. This one is a favorite in culinary dishes because the flower buds have a sweeter flavor than other lavenders. Its tidy growing habit makes it a good companion mixed into planters. For best flavor, harvest the buds when they turn from light gray to deep purple and before the flower petals open up. You can use them fresh or dried, and fresh-cut stems with the flowers left on make a fun swizzle stick.
