Another student who is an inspiration to me and to my other students is Tara. Her physical problems are mammoth, but her attitude and emotional strength are empowering to all of us.

In her mid-thirties, Tara has scoliosis so severely that one leg is noticeably shorter than the other. She has a congenital calcium deficiency and milk allergy, which, as a child, affected bone development.

For twelve years, Tara has been treated with cortisone for systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus), a chronic inflammatory and connective tissue disease that involves the vital organs and autoimmune system. It is manifest by extremely swollen joints that become red, hot, and stiff during periods of inflammation.

Despite medical conditions that most of us would consider to be debilitating, Tara has incredible spunk. She has found that if she does not exercise, she loses mobility. Consequently, she makes a concerted effort to improve her body potential. For a while she worked with a chiropractor who helped her to see the wisdom in giving up high heels.

“I was in more pain because I insisted on being in style,” Tara laughs. “He helped me see how silly that was and made me stop wearing heels altogether.”

Initially, Tara came to me because she had heard that this program was good for people with weak or damaged knees. She labored with the exercises, doing the most her body would allow. For her first six classes she could not raise her legs off the floor to do the Open & Close. In very little time she found benefits she never expected from this, or any program. Her lower back is stronger; she has improved flexibility, and now has physical strength that far surpasses the norm for people with her problems.

All this because she does what she can—her best.

Tara does this advanced exercise for her hips and behind because she can’t kneel. I don’t teach this to most students because it takes so much control. Tara is very conscious of what her body can and cannot do. It may seem that she is doing this and other exercises incorrectly. Not true. She is doing what is correct for her. She wears specially-fitted running shoes even while exercising for balance.
