Attention

As we now know well, when we are traumatized we have a tendency to see danger everywhere. Our threatened mind will focus us on threat, but compassionate attention will bring to mind the fact that we are alive and safe. A compassionate mind-set will expand the memories of our traumatic events to include thoughts that will help us to feel better about them and that are helpful to us rather than just paying attention to the highly threat-focused, fragmented memories that are our flashbacks.

Jeff’s story

Jeff’s compassionate mind focused on the fact that Jeff survived the bomb blast. It brought to mind how, although he was dazed and scared, he still tried to help others by talking calmly to them, telling them they would be okay; helping people up and supporting them as they walked; how the emergency services, who were coordinating the rescue, shouted orders for everyone to get out of the subway station as quickly as possible; and the fact that Jeff put his arm around a weeping man to comfort him. Jeff’s compassionate mind brought to his attention all the times Jeff had taken the subway and been safe, and it helped him focus on the young Muslim men he saw every day going about their daily business who were also hurt and affected by the bombings.
