Good Samaritan Evangelism

The story of the Good Samaritan seeks to teach us how to treat those we interact with on a daily basis. But I do think it can also help us with a strategy of evangelism as we face a skeptical, unbelieving gay community. I think it is true that people are more willing to hear our opinions when they truly think we care for them. I think the church would do well to be Good Samaritans to their gay and lesbian neighbors—doing good, acknowledging the good they do, being respectful, honoring the image of God, and entering into actual friendships. And when the moment presents itself, speak clearly the gospel of Jesus—grace, repentance, and obedience. This coupling of being good neighbors with the gospel is what I call Good Samaritan Evangelism.

As leaders, my wife and I have this as our vision of evangelism. We aren’t good at it yet, but we want to be. We have had the honor of meeting and being in relationship with many men and women who have struggled with homosexuality. We have been in small groups together, we have had meals together, we have laughed together, we have had hard conversations together, and we have sought to honor the image of God in them. Our hope is that the gospel will be declared and many will say yes to Jesus.
