The mysterious Kabbalah

One other book deserves mention, the Kabbalah, which contains several books with it. The largest text in the Kabbalah, the Zohar, was probably written around the 1200s by Moses de Leon — although believers argue it is far older.

The Kabbalah contains Jewish mystical thought. It became very prominent in Jewish life through the 1600s, especially because of its efforts to pinpoint the arrival of a Jewish messiah. However, the failure of false messiahs reduced enthusiasm for it. Still, many people continue to read the text and appreciate the Kabbalah’s basic idea that a spark of divine exists in all people.
