Honeybees (Apis mellifera)

Bees are especially attracted to thyme, catnip, lemon balm, pot marjoram, hyssop, sweet basil, summer savory and mint.

Whenever bees swarm, take a generous handful of lemon balm and rub it into the inside of the new hive to encourage the new swarm to remain there.

Horseradish (Armoracia rusticana)

Horseradish aids potatoes if it is restricted to only the corners of the potato plot. There is a symbiotic effect between the two plants while they are growing, and the potatoes become more healthy and resistant to disease. This does not necessarily mean that horseradish inhibits potato bugs.

Dig up horseradish plants after each season or it will spread too far. Try to remove all of the roots and pieces of root or they will start growing again and will spread. The condiment for the table is made by grating these dug-up roots and adding vinegar – a very tearful process unless it is done outdoors in a fair breeze!
