Following your opening question(s), listen and only listen while patients share their narratives. This may be more difficult than it sounds, because it is natural—and indeed, sometimes automatic—to start making a working diagnosis or theory while the patients are still telling their story (and sometimes even before). Try to resist that urge and listen to the patient’s entire story before drawing conclusions.

During patient’s opening narrative (as during any later narrative), do your best to engage in active listening (see Sect. 3.1) and related strategies and skills. It is important to be aware that some facilitative strategies such as repetition (echoing) and paraphrasing, which can be very helpful later in the consultation, may actually be counterproductive at this stage because they can interrupt the flow of the patient’s story. However, if a patient is very hesitant, it may help to provide more guidance and encouragement with either confirmation that you have understood (such as paraphrasing) or with additional questions.

In short: Let your patient talk and have your full attention on them while they are talking.
