After we had been in heavy combat on Luzon for about a month, we had a quiet period and were able to have a bull session where almost the whole squad, by then maybe seven or eight men left out of fourteen, joined in. We talked about the sometime problem of determining how aggressive you should be in an attack. There were questions such as where to draw the line between being cautious and being cowardly and where courage became stupidity. Garm brought the house down when he said in his slow drawl, “Well I know one thing. When we are in the attack and there is a man behind me, I call that man a coward.”
