Cell Death. When the divisions of cells in a tissue are completed, a stop signal tells the cell to rest. The stop signal has to be inactivated by a growth factor if that cell is meant to divide again at a later time. If both stop and growth factors are missing, then the cell dies. This form of programmed cell death, known as apoptosis, erases all cell content and leaves no traces behind. Apoptosis is not an accident, but in fact can be induced by certain factors as part of the regular repertoire of pattern formation. For example, some cell divisions in the worm Caenorhabditis elegans create new cells that shortly thereafter disappear through apoptosis. Apoptosis is also important during the development of the nervous system in many animals because initially many more nerve cells than required are produced. The surplus is eliminated by apoptosis. Finally, apoptosis is triggered by certain signals secreted by unhealthy cells so that they are eliminated.
