CHAPTER 12

GERMS ON THE MATERNITY WARD

WE WERE STANDING inside Woolworths when I felt a sudden twinge. I clutched my bump protectively.

‘Are you all right?’ Rob asked.

I was close to my due date but I’d been the one who’d insisted we go shopping to buy even more stuff for the baby.

‘Yeah, I’m fine,’ I lied through gritted teeth.

I reached over and picked up an antique looking baby sign.

‘Oh, look at this. It’s gorgeous. Shall we…’ I began to say but, before I could get the rest of the sentence out, I doubled up with pain.

The agonising throb ripped through my body like a bolt of electricity as my stomach tensed and hardened.

‘Hayley?’ Rob called.

But I couldn’t reply because another vicious pain stabbed through me, almost forcing me to my knees. I grabbed at Rob’s hand to stop myself from falling. I was holding the sign in my other hand but the pain was so intense that I started to cry.

‘Hayley, what’s the matter? Is it the baby?’

The other shoppers turned, it made me feel worse. I looked up at Rob and shook my head.

‘No, nothing’s wrong with the baby, I just think I’m going to be sick.’

I didn’t want Rob to go into a blind panic because, if he knew I was in labour, he’d call someone over and then I’d have everyone fussing around me.

‘Just get me to the car,’ I gasped as I clutched my stomach.

Rob helped me along and held open the shop door. As I waddled outside I felt all eyes on me. I’d really wanted to buy the sign because it said ‘Little Prince’s Room’. But the pain was so bad that I’d thrown it back on the side. The little prince, it seemed, was already on his way.

‘Something’s not right,’ I wept as soon as I sat down the passenger seat of the car.

‘What do you mean?’ Rob gasped in a state of panic.

‘It is the baby, Rob. I think I’m in labour!’

The blood drained from his face.

‘The baby! Are you sure?’

‘Yes, no… I don’t know.’

The problem was it was our first child and I really didn’t know if I was in labour or not, but it certainly felt like it. Rob wasn’t sure what to do so he pulled out his mobile phone and called his mum. I noticed his hands were trembling as he punched in Kay’s number.

‘Yes, that’s right… she’s got pains,’ he said relaying the information to her. ‘They’re in the front and in the… back?’ he asked, turning to face me.

I nodded as I huffed and puffed at the side of him. Not surprisingly, Kay told him to take me straight to hospital.

‘Right!’ he said dropping the phone.

As the car engine fired into life I remembered I’d left something behind.

‘Rob, my bag! If we’re going to the hospital then I need to go home and collect my bag.’

Rob was in a state, all he wanted to do was get me to the hospital as quickly as possible, but I was adamant.
