Step #3: Set Everything in Context

After a thorough look at the stories and a comparison of any parallels, the next step is to go deeper into the historical-cultural and linguistic context of each story. We must understand what the terms and stories meant to the people receiving them rather than basing interpretations of the stories on a modern perspective. Terminology such as "resurrection" should be set strictly within the cultural conception of the term for the time and place in which it was utilized. As noted earlier, the Egyptian conception of Osiris's rising from the dead was an entirely spiritual conception. The Egyptians did not plan to return to physical life; neither did the Greeks. Ante-Nicene church father Athanasius makes this clear: "For although the Greeks have told all manner of false tales, yet they were not able to feign a Resurrection of their idols,—for it never crossed their mind, whether it be at all possible for the body again to exist after death."38 They wanted to be free of the flesh and unite with their god in a spiritual land.
