Every time I see you I seem to forget how to walk
London
Ben asked me to meet him at Grams’ house at five o’clock because the afternoon thunderstorms this week were more like evening deluges and he wanted me to be able to see the progress on the house before the monsoon began.
I was excited. Really excited. Giddy even. It had been days since he dropped me off at the airport with a kiss that curled my toes, making me promise to come back to him. I had the distinct impression that seeing him for the first time in over four days was going to take my breath away, or hit me like a wave, or just plain knock me on my ass. Ever since he fell through my floor this sizzle had been simmering in my core and it grew into a five-alarm fire every time I was near him.
But since I left, that sizzle had become something new. Something terrifyingly addictive. Like a wildfire looking for a new avenue, the fire inside me kept reaching out, looking for Ben and, not finding him, returning to my belly hotter and more ferocious than before.
So I was pretty sure when I actually saw him again, touched his tool-roughened skin, I was going to go up in flames.
Maybe I should let the fire department know to be on the lookout for sudden explosions tonight.
He stood on the front porch, hands in his pockets with his thumb hooked into his jeans belt loops, leaning against the fresh column, a grin on his face that had to match my own.
Damn. He looked good.
His light brown hair was damp like he’d just rushed in a shower, curling just a little, begging for my fingers. A simple plain turquoise t-shirt stretched across his chest and work boots completed his head-to-toe perfection.
For some reason it hurt to breathe.
“You gonna stand in the middle of the yard all night or you want that kiss I’ve had waiting for you?”
Oh god. My knees went weak as a shiver raced through me, landing with a hot thud low in my core. I was head over heels for this guy. Just like that. Bam. Like lightning. I was a perfectly functional human being until he fell into my life and now . . . now I wasn’t quite human without him.
“I think you might have to come to me.” My feet didn’t seem to be working.
Or maybe I was just afraid if I tried to move, my knees would give out.
His grin widened to show the whites of his teeth, then he sauntered—yep, I said sauntered—down the three steps, kicking rocks as he shuffled right up to me and stopped.
He didn’t touch me but damn did it feel like he was.
I ached, that wild fire suddenly roaring to life, ready to leap onto him. He stood there, staring down at me, breathing heavy, his hands still in his pockets. Why hadn’t I called the fire department? I really should have. Because I was about to combust.
