Blind Man with Doves

Watercolour, Berol Karismacolor water-soluble pencil, oil pastels, Daler-Rowney line and wash board 15 x 10 cm (6 x 4 in.) Collection of the artist

This small painting (and Beached Boats) was made on watercolour board, which I like to use for work at this small scale. It means I don’t need to stretch paper, plus I can buy a large board and cut it down into maybe eight small boards.

Boatyard, Guilvinec, Brittany, France

Watercolour, Berol Karismacolor water-soluble pencil, Arches Rives printing paper 121½ x 80 cm (48 x 31½ in.) Collection of the artist

Many years ago, I bought various packets of paper from John Purcell in London – a mixture of watercolour paper and printing paper. I wanted to paint on a large scale, larger than the approximately A1 size that stores normally stock, so he sent me some packets of printing paper, which looked just like watercolour paper but behaved entirely differently.

The one I used here looks a bit like a Rough watercolour paper, but because of the way size was applied, it is much more absorbent and so required a slightly different approach. I had to paint with a more wet-into-wet technique and soak the paper thoroughly before commencing the work. I also loaded the brush with extra pigment, as this type of paper tends to ‘dull’ the colour more when it dries. I enjoyed using this paper and did some successful paintings on it.
