1 Oudine Rim and Fill in Iris and Pupil
I always start the eye by first outlining the rim of the iris. The rim is usually quite dark, so with blue eyes, I start with Indigo Blue. For brown or green eyes, I use Dark Umber on the rim. My next step is to apply a very light layer of Cloud Blue over the iris. (For brown or green eyes use Jasmine.) I then fill in the pupil with a heavy layer of Indigo Blue, leaving the highlight white.
2 Add Second Wash and Darken Pupil
The difference is slight, but here I've added a light layer of Deco Blue over the iris, then darkened the pupil with black. It's important to get the pupil intensely dark. Use plenty of pressure to burnish this area.
3 Build Iris Color and Re-Rim
First, I've layered the iris with Blue Slate. I do this carefully by starting at the outer rim with medium pressure, then decreasing my pressure as I move toward the pupil. I want to leave the area immediately around the pupil with only the first two light layers of blue. This will help to give the iris a translucent quality. Next, I rim the iris again, this time with True Blue.
4 Finish the Iris and Add Details
I completed the iris by going in with tiny amounts of True Blue and Periwinkle Blue with a rough, choppy stroke, still leaving the area around the iris lighter than toward the rim. Next, I darkened the eyelid line with Tetra Cotta. Don't be afraid to go too darkly with this line. Having a strong eyelid line really helps to give the entire eye depth. Without it, the eye can look flat. After lightly applying Deco Pink to the inside corner of the eye, I used Dark Brown and laid in some lashes.
