ASSISTANCE FROM VOCATIONAL REHABILITATIION

It is important to file the FAFSA and explore financial aid options even if you anticipate aid from your state’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) program. High school students with disabilities and older students who may have acquired their disabilities later in life can both benefit from the services offered by their state VR office.

The Vocational Rehabilitation programs in the United States were established as a result of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The Rehabilitation Act was designed to maximize the employment, independence, and economic self-sufficiency of people with disabilities (HEATH Resource Center, 1996).

As noted, students should apply for VR services, if they wish to receive them, during high school. Applicants are typically eligible for services if a counselor at VR determines that:

They have a disability.

Their disability prevents them from getting or keeping a job.

They require VR services to get or keep a job.
