RÉMY’S NORMALLY PALE, translucent skin was gaunt and crepey, and his pronounced dehydration left the ruined side of his face even more mottled and sunken.

His eyes found Lily’s and he shook his head. “I fear I don’t have the strength, my little witch. I cannot.”

Blood tears gathered at the corners of Jenya’s eyes and she wiped them away with her knuckle, smearing the crimson line like stage makeup from a b-rated horror film. She rested her palm on his cheek. “For me? Please?”

“No, mon couer.”

“I was skeptical at first, too. But Dr. Volkmann is the one who distilled the vaccine against the HepZ virus. If he believes this will help, then so do I,” Sean encouraged. “If it was unsafe, do you think I would allow Lily to participate?”

“This calls for much of your blood. I will not risk you or your baby, cherie. I cannot. I would never forgive myself if my lesser nature got the better of me and I harmed you.”

“Didn’t you read the medical report and recommendations Dr. Volkmann sent? You’re not going to harm me, Rémy. Trust me on this. What if I told you there was someone here to help?” Lily prompted.

“Who? Even I couldn’t promise to step in, not if it came to choosing between you and Rémy.”

“I don’t mean you, Jenya. I mean someone who loves me almost as much as Sean. Someone with the strength we need to complete the job.”

Rémy’s mouth slid into a smile. “Someone who loves you like a brother?”

She nodded.

“I believe that was my cue.” The tall, dark-haired cougar loitered in the bedroom door. “Talk about keeping me in suspense.”

“Ryan!” Jenya grinned, glancing between him and Lily.

He grinned but when he looked at Rémy, his face sobered. “No offense, dude, but you look awful. Why haven’t you let Dr. Volkmann check you over before this? The man is annoying as all get out, but he’s a powerhouse when it comes to curing the supe set.”

Rémy lifted a weak hand and motioned the big cat closer. “You smell like the mountains. Come, sit closer.” His fangs glinted in the bedroom lamps.

“Says the spider to the fly,” Ryan laughed. “Nice try, big guy. I’m having a hard enough time wrapping my head around your mad Russian doing the bloodletting, I have no intention of getting anywhere near your starving ass.”

Rémy burst out laughing for the first time in weeks. “Clever as always, my clawed friend.”

A Red Cross style blood collection system was set up across the room. Two ports were set up on either side. One for Lily and the other for Ryan.

“Shall we?” Ryan crooked his elbow toward Lily.

“Chivalry isn’t dead, and neither is compassion. Thanks for doing this, Ry.” She hooked her arm with his and went up on tiptoe to peck his cheek.

The two settled themselves and the process began. Jenya and Rémy stayed on one side of the room, neither seemingly bothered by the sight and smell of blood in the air.

“Are you both okay?” Sean asked, making sure to position himself between the two supernatural sets.
