Red Ribbon Necklace

Finished length: 24½" (62.2 cm)

This necklace is made with a vintage silk double-sided ribbon about 4½" (11.4 cm) wide. You need a wide ribbon, or the coils will not have enough rolled layers to give structure to the coiled bead and will be difficult to handle. Each strip was cut on a 45-degree angle, about ¾" (1.9 cm) wide.

The ribbon has selvages, which become the ends of the strips. As it is cut on the bias, it will not unravel.

Each strip is rolled (I alternated which side was out to take advantage of the two colors), keeping the edges fairly even. Each “bead” is strung on a double thickness of heavy-duty thread as soon as it is rolled. There is no need to stitch or glue the coils before stringing.

It was easiest to roll the strips by folding the angled end over the strip, then folding and pinching the end to start the roll. This way the tail did not get in the way or stick out too much.

The outside tails add another bit of interest. If they are cut, the ribbon may start to unravel. If you do not want to see the tails, fold the end in before the last wrap around and insert the needle near the closing fold.

I used 83 beads and an 8" (20.3 cm) length of cord, doubled, for the back of the necklace. As the coils are soft, I expect with time they will settle and some of the stringing thread may show where it joins the cord. To help head this off, I snugged them up fairly close without crushing them. For this reason, it might be best to store them flat and not on a peg or hook.

When all the coils were strung, I stitched them securely to the cording on both ends. This length will allow it to slip over my head.
