Chapter 5

Managing Depression

D epression affects millions of people all over the world and can affect anyone whether you are young or old, rich or poor, working or unemployed, have children or not, are married or live alone. Many of us will sometimes have a bad day caused by stress or a particular issue that is causing us emotional or physical discomfort. We feel a bit down, tired and generally a bit out of sorts, but it doesn’t last for too long. Depression is when that feeling of despair does not go away, like a dark cloud that hangs heavy over your head. It starts to affect how you function on a daily basis and how you interact or avoid interaction with those around you. It can leave you feeling alienated and alone, just trying to function “normally” can seem like an impossible and overwhelming task. If left untreated, depression can have serious outcomes including reliance on alcohol and drugs and even suicidal thoughts. There is hope for those that suffer from depression, as it can be very treatable and there are many ways to help. From medication, to a variety of therapies, finding the treatment or combination of treatments that work for you will help make vast improvements in your everyday life and give you the confidence and skills to cope with the set-backs and challenges you may face in the future. While many sufferers of depression are able to manage with the help of medication, a combination of medication with CBT techniques has been shown to have a greater positive impact in treating depression, can have much longer lasting results and empower you with tools you can continue to use for years to come (Pathak, 2018).

CBT works by looking at the underlying thoughts and beliefs that lead to negative behaviors and impacts on moods and feelings. When you are feeling depressed or suffer from clinical depression, you will be well aware of how caught up you can get in your head and how strong the effects of those negative thoughts and beliefs are on your daily functioning. It is those thoughts and beliefs that fuel negativity and fear and lead you to feeling much worse about yourself and your circumstances, and impact your ability to function. By understanding and changing those negative thoughts and beliefs, you can work on changing them and learning how to replace them with new positive thinking that will help you manage your depression on a daily basis (Clancy, 2019).

Most people who suffer from depression have negative beliefs regarding themselves, the environment they are in and their feelings about the future. Negative beliefs can include thoughts like feeling worthless, believing the place where they live or work is terrible and believing that they will never get better or things will always be terrible. You may have fallen into a pattern of finding things to reinforce these negative beliefs by always looking for the negatives in any situation or event that occurs and ignoring the positive aspects, therefore reinforcing those feelings and beliefs to be true.
