The evening was moonless, and clouds covered the stars, but thanks to the landscape lighting, there was plenty of light to see by. Bess had pretty good vision, too. Maybe better than vampire or werewolf eyesight. Maybe not. Hard to say since there had never been a comparison done as far as she knew.

The ground was fairly solid in the cold weather, but they’d yet to get a hard freeze, so the dirt was soft enough to hold a footprint. In addition, Luis did a great job of maintaining the property, and the leaves on the yard had recently been raked. All of that meant it was pretty easy to see where feet had bent the grass or walked through dirt recently.

Someone had probably coasted down the drive, lights and engine off, since neither she nor Cal had picked up on the car’s approach, then they’d run through one of the flower beds and about halfway across the yard to pitch that brick through her window.

She couldn’t wait to read that note.

After investigating the flower bed and yard, she went back to the driveway and jogged to the end where it met the road. She slowed near the tree line, looking in both directions to see if there was a parked car anywhere around.

Nothing. Whoever had broken her window hadn’t waited around. She looked at the woods beside her. Not in a vehicle, anyway.

She jogged back to the house to have a look at the note. She went straight to the sitting room.

Cal joined her. “Find anything?”

“Evidence of our visitor but nothing actionable.” She picked her way through the glass to grab the brick. “This is so old-school.”

“Brick through the window, you mean?”

“Yes.” She hefted it in her hand. “Let’s look at it in the kitchen.”

He hesitated, still staring at the glass all over the floor. “What about this glass, though? And you can’t leave that window like that. Murphy might do another runner. Or get cut if he were to come in here.”

Her main thoughts were about the note and whoever was behind this, but he was right. “We’ll shut the sitting-room doors for now.”

“You have anything I could board that window up with?”

She chewed at the edge of her bottom lip as she thought. “I have no idea. There’s a workshop at the end of the detached garage, but that’s Luis’s domain. He keeps the riding mower and all the other yard tools in there. He might have some wood, but I’ll just text him in a minute. I’d rather you not be out there when someone’s trying to get to you.”

“I can move pretty fast when I need to, you know.”

She kept walking toward the kitchen. “I’m sure you can, but Luis will come fix it. That’s why we have him, for general maintenance and emergencies. This qualifies as the latter.”

Cal followed. “All right. But I want to pay for the replacement window.”

“Fine with me.” She put the brick on the counter, grabbed a knife from the block, and sliced the string.
