Spin and Jump Through a Hoop
This trick will incorporate several steps and commands into one. Start with identifying cues that you will use for your dog to spin to the left or the right. For example, you can use "spin" to indicate they should go to the left and "twirl" to indicate that they should go to the right. Regardless of what you choose, be sure to stay consistent when you use them so your dog doesn't get confused.
With a treat in hand, hold it at nose level and slowly move it toward your dog's tail. As they follow it, keep it going around in a circle until they are facing you again. Click and reward with a treat.
Repeat step two several times and then do the same thing in the other direction.
Start incorporating the appropriate verbal cues as they are turning, and then gradually use the cue earlier and earlier until you are saying it just before they turn. Continue to click and reward for each turn.
Repeat step four several times in both directions, but stop using a treat in hand to lure them. Gradually make smaller and smaller hand motions until they are comfortably turning with only the verbal cue. Click and reward each turn.
You'll train the hoop jump separately now and incorporate the spin later. Start the hoop training by placing the hoop vertically but touching the ground between you and your dog.
Squat down so that you're looking at your dog through the hoop.
With a treat in hand, ask your dog to come. If necessary, put your hand holding the hoop through the hoop and lure them through. Click and reward them for stepping through.
Repeat step eight several times, but stop using a treat in hand to lure them, and gradually stand up with each completion so that you no longer have to be squatted down when they come through the hoop. Click and reward each time they go through successfully.
When they are comfortable coming through the hoop by stepping over it on the ground, raise it by a few inches, and use a cue such as "jump" or "go" for the same behavior. They should still be able to step over the hoop comfortably. Click and reward them each time.
Repeat step ten several times, but gradually raise the hoop off of the ground until they have to jump to come through. Click and reward each jump-through.
To combine these steps, use a turning cue with a click and reward, then follow up immediately with a jump through the hoop with a click and reward.
Repeat step twelve in succession several times and then stop the click and reward after the spin. Instead, lead them straight into the jump through the hoop with the appropriate cue and only use the clicker and reward at the end of the series.
Repeat step thirteen several times using only verbal cues and a click and reward at the end of the spin and jump through the hoop.
