Chapter 15

Boo-stagram, Ghostbook, BatTok, it seemed the mystery sand rider was trending on every horror social media page in the world. As Cleo’s father flipped through numerous videos of the beach, he couldn’t believe any respectful monster would be seen with the likes of Victor Frankenstein, the laughingstock of the elite community.

“A wealthy man of his stature shouldn’t be found mingling with riffraff and commoners,” he scoffed as he spoke to his shrouds. “And look at the shameless mummy woman mixing sand and water. It makes me sick.”

“Disgusting,” they agreed. “Just be glad your daughter doesn’t fool around with those silly sand surfer types. She’d be an embarrassment to the great mummy name of Imhotep.”

“Well, I’ve seen enough.”

Slamming his phone down on the lunch table, he was utterly revolted at how the mummy community was acting as of late. In the past three hours, it was all the talk of a mummy girl childishly playing in the surf of the grand lake with a human. Water and sand didn’t mix, and neither did monsters with humans in his eyes.

Soon his servant came to bring his food, and he watched as a beetle attempted to escape the plate. The vile creature caught it quickly, throwing it in his mouth where it escaped again through the hole in his cheek, but his tongue was quick to snatch it back and bite with a crunch.

“Mmm… I taste a hefty dose of garlic. That should keep the vampires away.” He chuckled.

“Your Highness, have you seen the videos of that mummy girl in the US? She’s been the talk of all the palace.”

“Eh, I could show that girl a thing or two in my day. But sand surfing is a waste of time. I have better things to attend to than playing in the dirt.”

As the man poured him a glass of that very thing, the mummy smiled. Lifting the glass of sand, the pleased look said it all as he swirled it around. “See... There are the fruits of the earth and the dust from which we came. There’s life in the sands, boy. We, mummies, don’t need that foul water weighing us down. Just a good puff of dust and we are free in the winds.”

The man watched as Imhotep took a dry drink that made him cringe. Only old mummy’s thrived on dirt alone and it only showed that soon they would return to the earth.

“You know, sir, that girl reminded me of Cleo when she was just a teen mummy. She was the best sand surfer this side of the Mediterranean.”

Imhotep looked up at the man mid-sip, sitting his glass calmly to the side. “What did you say?”

“Cleo, she was the best surfer around. She could have gone pro if she didn’t always spend all her time in the library.”

While chewing on a grubworm, her father did remember hearing his daughter was a skilled surfer, but he never paid much mind. She was so rebellious as a teen he couldn’t keep tabs on her, nor did he care to.
