It was not simply that bad movies predominated. What was worrying was the clearly perceptible slide in the popularity of the Taylor–Burton partnership. Younger audiences, on whom the industry increasingly depended, were no longer transfixed by the Cleopatra love story. It was so tame by the standards of the swinging sixties. What place was there for the Burtons in the age of The Beatles?

While filming the catastrophic Candy in 1968, where Burton played a bard based on Dylan Thomas, he and Elizabeth struck up a friendship with Ringo Starr. It was the dog days of the group and the drummer was looking for new avenues to explore. Here he was playing a Mexican gardener! Looking back, one of the highlights of the filming, the drummer recalled, was hearing Burton recite the lyrics of ‘I am the Walrus’ in that ‘magnificent voice of his’. In truth, by then the public appeal of ‘The Burtons’, the plc brand of ‘Dick & Liz’, was in danger of waning.
