Adding Using a Number Line

EXAMPLE

What is ⅔ + ¾ ?

Using a number line will help me visualize addition of fractions. Since I cannot add thirds and fourths, I need to find equivalent fractions for both ⅔ and ¾. I can rename ⅔ to 8⁄12 and ¾ to 9⁄12. Now I can add with like denominators.

What is…?

¾ + ⅝

4⁄10 + 3⁄6

5⁄10 + ½

4⁄6 + 4⁄9

3⁄6 + 1⁄12

⅔ + ¾

⅕ + 2⁄8

¾ + ½

3⁄11 + ¼

½ + 3⁄6

⅚ + 8⁄12

6⁄12 + 12⁄24
