Reflections

We shower children with awards and recognition because we hope to build confidence. This reinforcement is external and temporary. Confidence comes from within. It is a byproduct of self-awareness, a result of knowing our strengths and weaknesses. Self-awareness comes from success and failure, independently achieved. There are no awards for self-awareness, but it engenders strength of character. How much better it is to nurture self-awareness in children than to fill their cabinets with awards and trophies.

To help students better understand themselves, we can be the model of how self-awareness has influenced our actions and behaviors. To be an effective model, you need to be aware of your own attributes as a learner. If you haven’t already done so, refer to the handouts What Makes Me, Me? and My One Special Thing! to guide your reflections (visit go.solution-tree.com/instruction for these handouts). Think about what you discover about yourself as you answer the questions. How can you use what you know about yourself as a learner to help your students become more effective learners?
