Sydney

I sat on my cell floor long after the wardens left. Dazed and more than a little shaken, I looked down at the blood on my thighs.

Jasen and I had made love. And it had been everything I’d dreamed it would be.

I inhaled deeply, picking up the fresh ocean scent of him still clinging to my skin. I should have felt ecstatic, but instead I felt confused.

My body had come alive at Jasen’s touch and at the touch of the two other wardens. Goddess, if the earthquake hadn’t interrupted us, I might have had sex with both Raze and Terran too.

My aching cleft throbbed with excitement at the idea.

I shook my head. That was so very wrong. What kind of witch craves multiple males?

A very wicked one...

My grumbling stomach intruded on my self-castigating. It had to be getting close to dinner.

Just the thought of trying to choke down another nasty piece of loaf made my stomach churn. At this point, I might just eat my blanket instead. It certainly would taste better.

I looked over at my mattress and noticed something on the floor. It was the bag Jasen had brought me.

Didn’t he say he brought food?

No sooner had the thought floated through my head than I was scampering across the cell, snatching up the bag and emptying the contents over my mattress.

Food!

My mouth watered at the sight of sweetbreads, candied fruits, chocolate covered nuts, and preserved meats. All my favorites. With a moan, I dove into the food. I meant to save some for later, but my hands and mouth had other ideas.

I ate every morsel and then hunted down the few crumbs that had fallen onto the mattress. Only then did I sit back patting my belly in satisfaction. For the first time in forever, I was satiated. Even that strange gnawing hunger in my chest had gone away.

Sighing contently, I looked over the other items Jasen had brought me. Most of them had come from my dorm room at the academy.

I ran my fingers over the oval-shaped silver frame that contained a rendering of Novah and me when I’d been only two. Her arms were locked tightly around the toddler version of me as if she feared someone would snatch me away.

She loves me.

My eyes misted as I set the frame upright near my mattress. I knew I couldn’t keep it out, but right now it felt good to have a visual reminder of the only family I had.

I riffled through the other items on the mattress and discovered the large wood jewelry box Novah had given me for my fifth birthday. It was filled with medallions awarded for perfect attendance and progressing through my levels. I’d never got any academic distinctions, but then none had ever been expected from a null like me.

No. I’m not a null. I had to remind myself as I eyed the remaining contents of the jewelry box. There were a few pieces of obsidian jewelry. I’d always liked the smooth, glassy black stone and Novah used to gift me pieces from her collection.
