In 1949 Tanguy initiated the Filmtreffen, an annual international film club meeting hosted for the first three years of its existence by the French, after which it shifted to German sponsorship. In these early years, French and German film club members, film critics, and film directors and producers dominated the scene. The first meeting at the scenic Titisee in the Black Forest was an immense success. It was wistfully recalled in the mid-1950s as the “golden past” of the German film club movement, a characterization confirmed by one participant’s enthusiastic description:
It began in Titisee [1949], Schluchsee [1950], and Bacharach [1951]. At that time it was intended, above all, to surmount a . . . long intellectual isolation [geistige Internierung]. For twelve years we were cut off from the world; and the younger [among us] lacked entirely a perspective of nearly all of the history of film art, the most striking representations of which had been stigmatized as degenerate during the Third Reich. It was necessary to address this; and therefore the first film meetings were predominantly devoted to a fascinating taking of stock. In those days, we enjoyed an oversupply of filmic delicacies. We sat on hard benches in front of a improvised screen and watched the works of the French avant-garde, the great films of Carné, Renoir, and Feyder, representatives of the English documentary school, American realism, and Italian neorealism. . . . Direct contact with the works of art and the artists occupied the limelight, and subsequently discussions were passionate and spontaneous.12
