Ham and lentil soup simmered. Christmas music resonated softly through the halls and the library. The lights on all the Christmas trees twinkled, and the scent of pine and cedar wafted through the whole house. Almost every room had its own Christmas tree and garlands on the windows. Caroline knew she had made the right decision. No need for extra wedding decorations. The house was beautifully dressed for Christmas.
Roderick and Caroline cuddled under her favorite afghan on the sofa. Comfortable in his arms, she was in that nether world between sweet sleep and satisfying thoughts of her new reality. She had planned one spring wedding that never happened because David was killed. And now her Christmas and wedding plans were made, and she was here with Roderick. Almost all items on her to-do list had checks beside them, and she intended to enjoy this week.
Everything she owned was now at Rockwater, and her heart had truly moved in as well. By this time next Sunday, I will be Mrs. Roderick Adair, and all our family will be gone, and it will be just the two of us figuring out how to maneuver daily life. And weâll have our very first Christmas right here, no one else, just us. Like vapor, her thoughts drifted until she fell asleep.
She was awakened by a slamming door and rose from the sofa quickly. âRod, weâre here!â She recognized Sarahâs voice.
âFinally, youâre here. Weâve been waiting all afternoon.â She winked at Roderick, walking beside her on their way to the foyer.
Bella rushed around Gretchen to get to Caroline. âMy goodness, I think youâve grown another inch since I saw you last,â Caroline laughed. She kissed Bellaâs cheek before Bella reached for Roderick.
Caroline greeted Gretchen and Sarah and George before getting them to their rooms. She said to Sarah, âI canât wait to show you what weâve done with the master suite, but letâs get you settled first.â
The guests went to their suites to unpack, and Caroline and Roderick went to the kitchen to finish up the soup and cornbread. It was only minutes before she heard Bella playing the piano. Still, she could hardly believe how gifted Bella was and how much progress she was making at Duke. Hearing Bella play one song, âDavidâs Song,â had changed all their lives a year and a half ago. That moment in time had solved questions for her. It had freed Gretchen and Bella. And it had engaged Roderick and Sarah in all their lives in ways she never could have imagined. She knew that only God could have orchestrated something so unusual.
After dinner, they settled in the library for the evening, Roderick and Caroline on the sofa, Sarah and George on the loveseat, and Gretchen in the wing chair next to the fireplace. Bella moved back and forth from the sofa to the loggia to play the piano. Everyoneâs faces mirrored their happy, contented hearts as they spoke of the wedding and of Christmas.
As the evening waned, Sarah pulled a small box from behind a cushion on the loveseat.
