Raven had gotten all the way back to her cabin, letting the dogs run loose, when she decided to turn around and head back into town. This time, she put the dogs inside before heading out. Maybe it was crazy, but her curiosity about Jack wouldn’t let her alone, and Josie, the owner of Rose’s Café, was the biggest gossip she knew.

Normally, she avoided gossip, not really interested in who was doing what with whom. But if anyone knew the history behind an outstanding warrant for Jack’s arrest, it was Josie.

She parked in front of the diner, then hesitated, second-guessing her decision. Would it raise suspicions if she pried into Jack’s case? Carla mentioned Josie knew everything about everyone, and if she thought Jack was back in town, the owner of the diner might just decide to call the police.

There was also the fact that she didn’t normally spend her hard-earned cash in the diner. And the secret of Jack’s past was his to tell.

Except he hadn’t. Instead, he’d walked away.

Muttering to herself, she pushed open the driver’s side door and used Jack’s cane to make her way inside. It was between the breakfast and lunch hour, so she was able to find a seat at the counter easily enough.

“Hello, Raven, isn’t it?” Josie beamed at her. “Did you bring more quilts to Carla? I believe she sold your last one yesterday.”

“Really?” She was pleased to hear the news and made a mental note to stop by Carla’s Crafts after she was finished. “That’s great.”

“What can I get you?” Josie held her notepad at the ready.

“Is it too late for breakfast? I’d love two eggs over easy with hash browns and bacon.” Bacon and eggs were a luxury, but she deserved a reward for selling all of her Christmas quilts.

Next year, she’d have to make more.

“Of course not! Coming right up.” Josie filled a cup of coffee and set it in front of her.

“Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t necessarily want coffee,” she protested.

“It’s on the house,” Josie said. Then frowned. “Unless you don’t like coffee?”

She blushed and cradled the mug in her hands, relishing the warmth. “I love coffee. Just had my quota for the day, that’s all.”

“Quota schmota,” Josie said with a laugh. “I couldn’t run this place without coffee, it keeps me going.”

Josie’s coffee was great, and she let herself enjoy it as Josie put in her order, then returned to the counter. “What’s new with you?”

“Me? Nothing really.” Raven stared down at her mug, then drummed up the courage to say, “I just heard about Ian Kramer being out on medical leave. I hope he’s okay.”

Josie nodded sagely. “Sarah told me he was pretty sick at first, but he’s home and doing much better now.” She tilted her head curiously. “I didn’t realize you knew Ian and Sarah Kramer.”

“Oh, I don’t know them personally, but I heard the news when I stopped at the sheriff’s department.” Her face was growing so red, she felt certain Josie knew she was prying.
