One hot, dry afternoon, I was munching and dreaming of a brighter future, when my mean master came hurtling towards me from his house. He was cursing and waving his staff in the air.

“You lazy good-for-nothing ass!” he raged. “What are you doing, making a feast of my flowers? You – you—” He struggled to catch his breath as he waddled closer, the better to reach me with his stick.

I ducked out of his way and tried to head back to the stable, baring my teeth and braying in fright. If I could only hide myself in between the other donkeys, the master would not be able to touch me with his hateful staff.

But then a rope was slung around my neck.

“You’re coming to market, you pitiful beast,” bellowed the cruel man, as he viciously beat my hindquarters. “I’ve had enough of feeding a runt like you.”

And with my head hanging low and my tail between my legs, I was led away.
