It was a very long way from England to Kenya. When Christian finally set off on his journey to live with George in Africa, it would take him fifteen hours to get there. For this trip he wouldn't be able to travel sitting in between John and Ace as he had on the car journey from Harrods to Sophistocat. He would have to be shut up in a big wooden crate in a special part of the plane.

The crate was delivered to Bill and Virginia's well in advance so that Christian could spend some time in it before he needed to use it for the actual journey. That way, they hoped, he would get used to it. When he caught sight of the crate, he sniffed around it for a long time before going inside. At first he simply walked in as far as he could go, then quickly backed out again. He didn't seem to like it very much. But over the next few days he agreed to eat his meals in it; eventually he even slept there. It was big enough for him to turn round and sit up in, but it was still a very small space in which to spend fifteen hours.

“I feel so bad,” Ace said one day, a week or so after Christian's birthday. “How will he ever cope with being in there for such a long time?”

He and John were about to find out.

The very next day, Bill had a call from George in Kenya. George had been busy making preparations for Christian's arrival, and now everything was ready.

Bill came racing over to Christian's enclosure, whooping and cheering John, Ace and Christian looked at him expectantly.

“Well?”

Bill grinned excitedly and grabbed Christian's paws. “You're going, fellow!” he said.

The young lion's eyes lit up, and he ran from Bill to John to Ace and back again, nudging them all. It was as if he understood the good news perfectly — he was going to Kenya!
