Jerusalem set a plate of bacon, eggs, and toast in front of Chrissy and sat next to him with his own breakfast.

“So you’re wanting to find a job?”

“I need one, yeah.”

“What do you want to do?” Jerusalem popped a piece of salty goodness into his mouth.

“I can wash dishes, host, wait tables. That’s really it.”

“Okay. Let’s go get you some job-hunting clothes.”

Chrissy smiled at him. “I have the khakis and your shirt. That’s plenty. No one cares what a dishwasher wears.”

“You said host and waiter—they’ll want you to wear nicer clothes if you do that. Besides, Daddy wants to buy you nice clothes.”

“You’re doing it again.” Chrissy took his hand and kissed it.

“What am I doing?”

“Spoiling me. I don’t need anything nice for what I do. Your shirt is just fine.”

“I’m allowed to spoil you. I want to spoil you—so just let me.” There was nothing wrong with a little spoiling.

“I’m not— You don’t need to waste your money on me. I’ll get something. I’ll go out today and start pounding the pavement.”

“Stop that, Chrissy. You’re important to me. I want to make life better for you.” His boy could be so stubborn.

Chrissy kissed his cheek. “You already have.”

He touched Chrissy’s cheek, stroked it. “Thank you, boy.” Leaning in, he kissed his boy gently. “Eat your breakfast. The bacon is delicious.”

“It is. What are you going to do today? Anything fun?”

“I’m driving my boy around to look for a job.” He needed Chrissy to understand he didn’t have to do things on his own.

“You don’t have to. You know that, right?”

“I know. Baby, I want to help you. That’s a good thing.”

“It is. I wish…” Chrissy shook his head and grabbed his orange juice.

“What do you wish? Maybe I can be your fairy godfather.”

“You already are.” Chrissy took a deep, deep breath. “My brilliant lover.”

Chrissy did make him feel good. “All I need is wings, eh?”

“Maybe a halo too.”

He chuckled. “I’m just your Daddy, eh? No wings or halos. Just a man.”

“My man.” Chrissy sounded like he was about to cry.

“Yes, your man. Always. What’s wrong? You can tell Daddy anything.” He ignored his breakfast for now, concerned about what was going on with his boy.

“Nothing. I’m just being emotional. Just being silly.”

“I like the fact you’re being emotional about me. I’m certainly emotional about you.”

“Yeah, this is a wild thing—I mean, everything is new, and it’s been a week.” Chrissy kissed his throat, the touch sweet, gentle.

“It’s been the best week I can remember ever having.” He wouldn’t change it for anything.

“Yeah. Yeah, it has been. I’m going to miss just being with you.”

“You know you don’t have to go find work, right? I’m totally happy to spend more time exploring with you.”

“I have to earn my keep, Salem. I can’t be a mooch.”

He kept himself from rolling his eyes. “You’re not a mooch. And who says everyone has to contribute in the same way?”

“Like I’ll ever be able to contribute to us as much as you do. That’s impossible.
