Chapter Nine

“So what happened this morning?” Leslie asked as she set a plate of mashed fruit in front of Elijah, who was sitting in his highchair and babbling at Malcolm.

Malcolm had come over for lunch today but she’d already heard through the grapevine that he and Hudson had gone out on patrol early because of some kind of disturbance. He must be tired, but she couldn’t tell it to look at him. In a short-sleeved T-shirt, cargo-type pants and heavy boots, he just looked good enough to eat. Like always.

“Our sentries spotted a strange wolf in the territory. They saw him a couple times and he avoided approaching any of them. Could be any number of things. Someone passing through, someone sniffing out our territory.” He shrugged. “I don’t want to talk about that though. What are you doing tonight?” His blue eyes flashed to pure wolf for a moment before flashing back.

“I don’t have any plans. But if a certain sexy wolf asks me out, I’m in.” Oh, she was so in. And she hoped those plans included them getting naked. She wasn’t sure if she was ready for full-on sex, but that didn’t mean they couldn’t have fun and explore each other.

He grinned at her. “I’ll pick you up here at six, if that works?”

She nodded. “As long as my mom can watch Elijah—and I can’t see her saying no.”

Elijah, who had clearly decided he didn’t like not being the center of attention, squealed and threw a piece of banana over the edge of his highchair.

Malcolm picked it up and set it on the table to be thrown away.

Elijah shoved a piece of banana in his mouth, then took another piece and threw it off the edge of the highchair again, intently watching Malcolm as he did it. Not challenging, but curious.

When Malcolm bent down to pick it up again, he laughed, spitting banana out and shaking his fists in the air as if this was the funniest thing in the world.

“If you keep doing it, he’s going to keep throwing food on the floor.” She sat down next to him, so that she could watch both Malcolm and Elijah.

Malcolm grinned. “I know. I just don’t care.”

Elijah took a little handful of banana and held it over the highchair, then stopped and put it back on the tray. But then a second later tossed it over and looked away as if he hadn’t done it. Then he started giggling maniacally as Malcolm bent down to pick it up.

“He’s the cutest baby who was ever born,” she said, knowing full well she was biased.

“I know. I love having pups around again.”

She did too, and she was glad that Elijah was going to grow up with other pups in a safe, happy pack. There were at least ten in the pack right now, and a few other females were currently pregnant. Something was definitely in the water and she was grateful for it. She also loved the interaction between Malcolm and her son.
