In Chinese, a bottle gourd is homophonous with blessings, and so represents wealth and peace. It is an auspicious symbol in the traditional culture. In the old days, the rich would plant bottle gourds to repel evil spirits. Other people would hang them under the roof as a propitious object to keep them safe and peaceful.
The bottle gourd is a popular theme in Chinese painting since the fruit and broad leaves form a nice composition to let the painters demonstrate their ink wash painting skills.
1 Mix gamboge and vermilion to paint the upper half of the bottle gourd with three strokes.
