Sam promised her nothing would happen, that no one would hurt her, but she still couldn’t quell her nerves. Especially when they confirmed John had escaped then showed her into a new room.

A place with no windows, a small table, and two chairs.

She sat down and waited alone for what felt like forever. Sam didn’t stay, though she wished he would have.

Not that she had any reason to hope for him to stay. Charlie had to remind herself again and again that he didn’t owe her a damn thing. He was here to protect the people who had been kidnapped and experimented on, to make sure that nothing happened to them.

That nothing else happened to them.

And she had to deal with what John had said—that she might have been at least partly responsible for their misery. She might’ve had something to do with all of this.

She touched her grey hair, her fingers sliding through the strands, reminding herself that this was the worst that had happened to her.

No oversized fangs. No bulging limbs or googly eyes. No horns, no scales… nothing.

All things considered, she’d managed to survive with almost everything intact.

Which was potentially evidence that she wasn’t exactly innocent.

The door to the small room opened after what felt like hours. She sat up straight, her whole body strung tight and her throat dry.

She was insanely thirsty, but as Sam walked in, grim-faced, with Dr. Manners and two other men—Mason and Chase, she assumed, since they smelled like bears—she suddenly thought twice about asking for water.

No way was she going to ask for anything when she didn’t even know what her own involvement in all of this was.

Albert was nowhere to be seen, which was probably a blessing considering the man’s obvious desire for vengeance against John—which would easily transfer to whoever else might have aided in John’s nefarious deeds.

She looked at Sam. He caught her eye but then quickly glanced away, wounding her a little.

Dr. Manners sat down in the only other chair in the small room. He had a yellow folder with him, and he opened it to look at some papers inside that she couldn’t read.

She waited for him to say something, to start the party, but he remained silent, scanning the papers. After two of the longest minutes ever, Charlie couldn’t hold it back anymore.

“So, what are you going to do with me?”

Dr. Manners barely glanced at her, though he sighed heavily. “For now? Nothing.”

She didn’t believe him. “Nothing?”

He closed the file. “You’re aware John evaded Albert?”

“Yes.” She didn’t know what they expected her to say, but clearly, that wasn’t good enough if the low-pitched, growling noise Sam let out was anything to go by.

Chase and Mason managed to look a little more composed, though she did catch the way their arms flexed and jaws tightened.

Dr. Manners was the only one in the room who managed to look remotely in control, as if they weren’t talking about anything of consequence. He continued on with his questions, unfazed.
