Children’s words: how relatedness supported autonomy

In the research described above, carried out among year 3 and year 6 pupils in Meadowbank Primary School, UK, one year 6 boy told me during an interview that as children became older, pupils became more easily inhibited by their peers, especially peers of the opposite sex in the context of the traditional classroom. Jem explained:

‘If you’re in year four, five and six [ages 8–11], maybe, you might get scared because you’re really self-conscious kind of thing. Because you think everyone’s looking at yourself … I think I feel a bit more scared in front of the girls, because they always like giggle to each other and stuff.’
