Thirteen

Breakfast next morning was in the dining room. Just us, Dakota, George and a mountain of food. Saskia and I could pack it away when we wanted to but we didn’t need to, so we contented ourselves with a quite modest pile of pancakes. Dakota had to go catch the bus to school. She said she’d be back on it as well today, Ethan having something or other he needed to do. She seemed quite happy this morning. It appeared to be something to do with the effect she’d had on Ethan the night before. Something to do with Saskia apparently - at least according to Dakota.

George had arranged a car to collect us and take us to the site. He left with Chuck leaving instructions to just wait and ask Martha for anything we wanted.

The site was just that. A building site with portable cabins on it. I’d expected it to be further on than this. So had the people in England - which is why Saskia and I were there.

We’d asked for a meeting with all the workers. While we waited for them all to turn up we sipped more hot chocolate, possibly arranged specially for us, and chatted.

“They haven’t done anything,” said Saskia.

“Not quite true. They’ve cleared the site and put in the cabins and services. But they should be further on than this.”

We’d apparently brought the correct colour hard hats with us. We hadn’t of course, we’d just made them appear, together with copies of our white badges, a sure sign of rank.

With everybody assembled, Saskia opened the meeting. “So. We know there’s a problem with the plans but that’s all. What’s going on and how can we help?”

“The plans are wrong, obviously wrong.” said one of the American workers. “The dimensions are stupid.”

“That’s about the only thing we agree on,” said an English worker. “What we don’t agree on is by how much.”

“But the plans were carefully drawn up and checked at the plant,” said Saskia. “Nobody spotted any problems there.”

I let them argue for a while, just listening and gathering information. I thought I might know what the trouble was.

“Ok, ok,” I said, finally. “Let me see if I can guess what you’re all thinking. You Americans think the dimensions are about twenty five times two large? Yes? And you people from England think they’re about ten times too large? Right?”

“Yes! How did you know?”

I didn’t answer at once. “Can you find some plans? Thanks.” I looked at the plans as produced.

“Can you see? No units.”

“Right? What are you getting at?”

“Americans. What units are they?”

“Inches. But the sizes are too big.”

“English? What units are they?”

“Centimetres. But.... Oh no!”

“Oh yes!” I said. “The plans are in millimetres - they’re engineering drawings. How many millimetres in an inch? Anybody?”

“Er, about twenty five. Twenty five point four if I remember.”

“Prize to the man in the white hat. And millimetres in a centimetre? Ten, right?”

Saskia had been listening intently. “So you Americans think twenty five times too big,
