White oak baskets can be made with a number of different weave structures. In the checkerwork weave, the thickness of the warp and the weft is the same. The weave is an even over-one-under-one process, producing a checkerboard effect. A checkerwork basket is also called a “split basket.”

A popular variation of white oak basketry is the rib basket, possibly the most common form made throughout the Appalachians. To create a rib basket, the maker begins with a pair of intersecting hoops and builds a framework of rigid splints. These are woven over with flexible splints, so little of the rigid warp is visible.
