The 144,000 Checkmat e

JWs are taught that the numbering of the 144,000 anointed Christians began with the Lord’s disciples and continued into the Church Age. All of the members of the Watchtower’s governing body (those who run the organization in Brooklyn) claim to be anointed and among the 144,000. There is a great deal more that could be said about this subject, but this is all that one needs to know in order to execute the checkmate.

So, during that long period of more than 1,900 years since Christ’s ascension to heaven, God has been very selective. He has not been trying to save the world. The saving of all mankind who will obediently give response to God’s commands will be accomplished during Christ’s thousand-year reign over earth. During the past 1,900-year period God has been selecting those who will be kings and priests with Christ and who will rule during that thousand years to bring blessings to mankind. This kingly governing body will be a heavenly group

and is restricted in number to 144,000 persons. 23

THEOCRATIC DIRECTION TODAY

13 God’s visible organization today also receives theocratic guidance and direction. At the headquarters of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Brooklyn, New York, there is a governing body of older Christian men from various parts of the earth who give the needed oversight to the worldwide activities of God’s people. This governing body is made up of members of “the faithful and discreet slave.” It serves as a spokesman for that faithful “slave.”

14 The men of that governing body, like the apostles and older men in Jerusalem, have many years of experience in God’s service. But they do not rely on human wisdom in making decisions. No, being governed theocratically, they follow the example of the early governing body in Jerusalem, whose decisions were based on God’s Word and were made under the direction of holy spirit.—Acts 15:13-17, 28, 29. 24

Knowing the three divisions in the book of Revelation is the key to forming this checkmate. Two verses, taken together, make it absolutely clear that the 144,000 falls into the future: Revelation 1:19 and Revelation 4:1.

Revelation 1:19 –

Write the things which thou hast seen [past tense], and the things which are [present tense], and the things which shall be here- after [future tense]….

A three-fold division of time is presented in Revelation 1:19, as a three-fold division of the events of the Revelation itself.

In Chapter 1 – John saw Christ unveiled in His ascended glory. This marks the first division, which is past.
